Gold Class businesses are dedicated to providing their customers with efficient, safe and high-quality repairs. They are confident they can properly repair their customers' collision-damaged vehicles and understand the need to continually update their training and knowledge of the collision repair process.

Platinum Individual ™

The Platinum Individual program was created to recognize individuals in the collision industry for achieving a high level of technical training through I-CAR and Industry Training Alliance members. WHAT DO THEY DO?

Auto body technicians are the artists who turn dented, battered and rusted wrecks into a celebration of style, form, and color. They repair, refinish, and customize car and truck bodies, lovingly repairing everything from minor dents and nicks to badly damaged frames and body sections. If you've ever been in a collision requiring the repair of your car's body, you've likely witnessed firsthand the amazing feats performed by these artists.

A typical day finds an auto body technician (also referred to as a collision repair specialist) estimating damage, straightening bent bodies, removing dents, replacing crumpled parts that are beyond repair, mixing and matching paint colors, and spray-painting and refinishing cars to a lustrous sheen. Though they can repair all types of vehicles, auto body technicians usually work on cars, small trucks and sport utility vehicles.

Every car presents a new challenge, since each damaged vehicle is likely to have its own peculiarities but must always be repaired to factory specifications. In addition, many cars today are made of high-strength steel, aluminum and plastic. It's up to auto body technicians to decide the most appropriate repair methods for each job, using their broad knowledge of automotive construction and repair techniques. The job is becoming increasingly high-tech.

Virginia apprenticeships

Va's Electronic Labor Market

Most technicians, in fact, now use the computer and other high-tech equipment as a regular part of the job. With advances in technology and higher repair standards, auto body technicians have become much more than artists--they are highly-skilled professionals.

Specific tasks include:

  • Estimating the cost of a repair job
  • Pounding out small dents and straightening bent or twisted frames
  • Welding metal parts
  • Removing, and repairing, or replacing damaged body parts
  • Filling damaged areas with solder or plastic body fillers
  • Filing, grinding, sanding, and smoothing filled or repaired surfaces
  • Repainting parts and frames
  • Installing window glass and windshields

Appraiser Certification: CREDIBILITY and COMPETENCY

How many times have you listened to body shop owners complain about poor damage estimating or, even worse, incompetent estimators? How many times does the appraiser at your shop miss items and forget to call the insurer for a supplement?

Your shop's profitability and productivity begin with that damage estimate. The person controlling that pen or keyboard should understand all of the structural aspects and industry terminology involved in writing a valid and comprehensive damage report.

One way to heighten appraisers' skills is through training. Estimators can combine their training and work experience to earn certification--and employing estimators certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can prove advantageous to your shop's profit and, ultimately, reputation.

Respect and Responsibility

Pride in workmanship is an important trait for a professional in any segment of the automotive industry. As a certified professional, your performance should set and maintain standards for your area of expertise within the collision repair industry. Damage estimators bear a large responsibility because their performance affects that of the technicians and painters, who base their procedures on the repair estimate. Consequently, this influences the business' reputation, shop profitability and customer satisfaction.

An appraiser's certification often begins with the basics, including proper training in damage analysis. Instruction customarily includes structure terminology and examination criteria, as well as how to look for secondary damage. Estimating training programs, such as those offered by Vale National Training Center and I-CAR, allow appraisers to hone their estimating skills and prepare them for the next level--certification. I-CAR and Vale National are just two of the institutions where such training is available; in fact, some insurers even hold in-house appraiser training classes.

What is ASE Certification?

According to ASE president Ron Weiner, "Representatives of both the collision industry and the insurance industry met with ASE in order to create a commonality and acceptance that would test the credibility, methods and competence of those who prepare and write an estimate of damage."

The certification exam for estimators "indicates a level of credibility, competency and a desire to improve his or her skills," Weiner says. "It demonstrates the fact that they know some of the basics in damage analysis and have some understanding of the technology that's involved in the repair. Also, the processes and knowledge [used] during the appraisal indicate a certain ... proficiency."

A characteristic of those who pursue voluntary certification, says Weiner, is that they care enough to demonstrate their skill, knowledge and eagerness to prove they meet a national standard.

Warren Barbee, Jr., technical specialist for collision repair and refinishing with ASE, advises that "anyone who writes an estimate on vehicle damage should consider taking the damage analysis certification test. [It] will help recognize those individuals who are working as estimators or appraisers in the collision industry [but] haven't been tested or recognized by any other major organization before.."

To promote the damage analysis certification exam, Barbee asks body shop owners how long they plan to stay in business, how sharp they think their estimating skills are, and how they feel about what they're doing. Barbee believes that most of the answers will help to promote the certification tests. The exam will test the estimator's skills in the field, and an ASE patch tells consumers how good damage appraisers are at what they do--which, of course, benefits the repair shop.

The test is written in relation to a task list within the self-study guide as well as information gained from the I-CAR Collision Repair 2000 course. Every question is written to address one or more of the tasks within the guide. There are no surprise questions on the exam; however, it is recommended that the person review a training class before taking the test.

Why is Certification Important?

"ASE certification recognizes the skill level of an appraiser, [something] the industry is not always sure about these days," says Barbee, noting that body shops complain when a representative of the insurance industry writes what they call a "short-changed" estimate. However, certification indicates that the person knows how to perform his or her duties according to industry standards, and knows how to do the job effectively.

According to Trish Serratore, vice president of ASE West Coast operations, the ASE Damage Analysis certification exam "is both a professional and personal credential, and an important thing to have."

Michael Astalos, material damage group manager for Integon Tech, says some insurers--such as Integon--offer their appraisers training in proper damage inspection. At the completion of its training program, the appraiser may refer to his or her indoctrination as a "quasi certification"--a demonstration that the person has advanced to a higher level of understanding and achievement.

Top 10 Reasons to Become ASE-Certified

Everybody knows that MD following an individual's name means Medical Doctor. And most people know that CPA signifies Certified Public Accountant. Associations and professions use certification to recognize qualified and competent individuals. The certification process is one of the single most important steps in career development. Here are the top ten reasons an automotive professional should consider becoming ASE-certified.

1. Certification grants you professional credentials. Since it recognizes your individual accomplishments, ASE's certification serves as an impartial, third-party endorsement of your knowledge and experience on a national, even international basis.

2. Certification demonstrates your commitment to the automotive service and repair profession. Receiving ASE certification shows your peers, supervisors and, in turn, the general public, your commitment to your chosen career and your ability to perform to set standards.

3. Certification enhances the profession's image. ASE's certification program seeks to grow, promote and develop certified professionals, who can stand "out in front" as examples of excellence in the automotive service and repair industry.

4. Certification reflects achievement. ASE certification is a reflection of personal achievement because the individual has displayed excellence in his or her field by meeting standards and requirements established by the entire automotive industry.

5. Certification builds self-esteem. ASE certification is a step toward defining yourself beyond a job description or academic degree while gaining a sense of personal satisfaction.

6. Certification can improve career opportunities and advancement. ASE certification can give you the "edge" when being considered for a promotion or other career opportunities. ASE certification clearly identifies you as an employee who has demonstrated competency in specific technical specialty areas based on accepted industry standards.

7. Certification may provide for greater earnings potential. Many automotive professionals who have become ASE certified experience salary and wage increases based on their certification status. ASE-certified professionals are in high demand throughout North America.

8. Certification improves skills and knowledge. Typically, achieving ASE certification requires training, study and "keeping up" with changing technology. ASE certification showcases your individual competence by confirming proficiency and knowledge.

9. Certification prepares you for greater on-the-job responsibilities. Since ASE certification is a clear indicator of your willingness to invest in your own professional development. Certified professionals are aware of the constantly changing technology and environment around their profession and possess the desire to anticipate and respond to change.

10. Certification offers greater recognition from peers. As an ASE-certified professional, you can expect increased recognition from your peers for taking that extra step in your professional development.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE REPAIRING YOUR VEHICLE

  • Don’t take chances driving a wrecked vehicle if it is obviously unsafe to drive. See if the repair facility or insurance company can provide or arrange towing for you.
  • Know that you have the right to have your vehicle repaired at the facility of your choice. No insurance company can insist or require that you use a particular repair facility.
  • You are not required by any law to obtain more than one damage appraisal/estimate.
  • Certain insurance companies may refer you to one of their drive-in claims centers for an inspection. YOU may also request the insurance co. to inspect your vehicle at a repair facility of your choice where the estimate can be negotiated.
  • Don’t compromise the quality of repair of your vehicle. For most people their vehicle is an important investment so be sure to choose a highly recommended collision repair facility with technicians certified by I-CAR or ASE.
  • Estimates may vary in cost from one facility to another, or even from different insurance companies. This is usually due to an inability to see all the hidden damage. We will be happy to answer any questions for you regarding this.
  • Ask the repair facility if original manufactures (OEM) replacement parts will be used for your vehicle.
  • Ask if the repair facility offers a warranty on the repair.
  • Beware of a repair facility that would agree or offer to bury or absorb a deductible. They can only do so by defrauding both you and the insurance company by not repairing the vehicle as indicated on the insurance estimate. This could jeopardize the quality of the repair.

Tips on How to Wash Your Car

Taking proper steps in washing your car can enhance the effort of detailing. Proper washing will keep contaminants off your paint finish and reduce dulling and deterioration of the paint finish. You should never wash your car in open sunlight if possible. Also make sure the car is cool. Wash water and rinse water evaporate too quickly and tend to leave water spots which are salt and mineral deposits. Such deposits are capable of eating through wax and etching paint if left on the painted surface for any length of time. Use lukewarm or cool water. Water which is too hot or too cold can cause a shock to the paint and lead to microscopic fractures of the paint surface.Never use household detergent --powdered or liquid-- these soaps are formulated to scour metals, plastics and porcelains to remove grease and oil. The mere fact that soap is advertised as being gentle to your hands does not mean it is gentle to your paint/wax finish. Many of these soaps have high sodium or alkaline content and are too strong for automotive care. These soaps can accelerate paint oxidation by depleting the oils from the paint and also removing existing wax. Use a pH balanced or neutral (pH7) soap on your car. Always check the label of the soap you are using for a listing of all the ingredients. You are better off using too little soap than too much. Too much soap will leave a residue if not rinsed off thoroughly. Soaps provide a lubrication to the cleaning process going on between the sponge or mitt and the painted surface. Wash the car from the top down. Some detailers use different sponges or mitts for the upper part of the car from the lower part of the car, since there are more dirt particles on the lower part of a vehicle closer to the road. Rinse the car often during the washing process. Use a large bucket like an old 5 gallon joint compound bucket or a plastic bucket from your favorite local donut shop. Adding a teaspoon of vegetable oil to the bucket prior to adding water and soap will assist the soap in carrying away the dirt particles from the painted surface during the washing process. In drying your car, use at least a couple of towels; one to quickly push the water off the car, the other to dry the surface of the car. Open up all doors and lids on the vehicle to enable semi exposed areas to dry completely. If you insist on a chamois, use only an English Cod Oil tanned chamois. Other chamois may remove wax and eventually scratch the paint surface. Synthetic silicone-free chamois are available for quick and easy water removal from the car. In any event, the final drying procedure should be done with a cotton towel.

How often should the coolant be changes?
For “ordinary” antifreeze, the vehicle manufacturersgenerally recommendcoolant changes everytwo to three years or30,000 miles. Others sayit’s not a bad idea tochange the coolant everyyear for maximum corrosionprotection - especiallyin vehicles thathave aluminum heads, blocks or radiators. Butsuch recommendations are changing because several antifreeze suppliers have introduced
“long-life” antifreeze formulationsthat provideprotection for up to fiveyears or 50,000 miles.General Motors introduceda new five year,or 100,000 mile antifreeze in its 1996 model year cars and light trucks. The new coolant is called “Dex-Cool” and is dyed orange to distinguish it from ordinary antifreeze (which is green).

These new long life coolants provide extended life only when used in a clean system mixed with water. If mixed with ordinary antifreeze and/or old coolant in a system, the corrosion protection is reduced to that of normal antifreeze (2 to 3 years and 30,000 miles). One way to find out if it’s time to change the antifreeze is to test it. Several suppliers make special antifreeze test strips that react to the pH of the coolant and change color. If the test strip indicates a marginal or bad condition, the coolant should be changed. You want the coolant to bealkaline in order to inhibit corrosion of your radiator. The concentration of antifreeze in the coolant should be checked prior to the onset of cold weather. A 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water is recommended and will protect against freezing down to a temperature of -34 degrees F and boil over protection to 263 degrees F. For maximum protection, up to a 70% mixture of antifreeze can be used for freezing protection to -84 degrees F. Do not use more than 70% antifreeze, and never run straight water in the cooling system, because it offers no corrosion, freezing or boil over protection.

WHAT IS A DIRECT REPAIR SHOP?
A direct repair facility is a body shop that works directly with your insurance company as a preferred shop. Body shops earn the right to be in preferred shop programs by meeting certain requirements. These include having certified technicians, using the proper equipment, and most importantly, having a record of satisfied customers. When you use a preferred shop, the repair process is streamlined. A preferred shop actually writes the estimate, orders the parts, and repairs your vehicle without having to wait for an insurance adjuster. Insurance companies constantly monitor their preferred shops to ensure quality repairs.

ARE YOU OPEN SATURDAY?
No, we are open Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm.

WILL THE PARTS BE ORDERED BEFORE I DROP OFF MY VEHICLE FOR REPAIR?
Absolutely. We generally order your vehicle's parts at the time that we write the estimate and schedule your vehicle for drop-off a couple of days later. This enables us to provide quicker turnaround time.

IF MY VEHICLE'S FRAME IS DAMAGED IS IT A TOTAL LOSS?
No. A car is a total loss only when the price of repairs exceeds the insurance companies determined value of your vehicle. Nowadays, most cars are built using unibody (frame and body as one) construction. Our highly skilled technicians, with the aid of our state-of the-art systems , can return your vehicle to its original factory specifications. If it is determined that the frame section is bent beyond repair, that section can simply be replaced.

CAN YOU MATCH THE PAINT COLOR?
Today's modern factory finishes incorporate multiple layers of highly specialized paints. Bertolli's Auto Body has made a major investment in the finest paint system available and constantly upgrades its technology and equipment to ensure that each vehicle's paint matches. At Bertolli's Auto Body we use the Chroma-Vision system which allows us to accurately match you specific vehicles paint formula. We take special pride in our ability to match factory finishes as the final step in the restoration process.

CAN I GET OTHER SERVICE WORK DONE ON MY VEHICLE WHILE IT IS IN THE BODY SHOP?
Yes. Just let your advisor know what other work you would like done so that he can make the necessary arrangements.

HOW LONG WILL THE REPAIRS TO MY VEHICLE TAKE?
Your advisor can give you an estimate of the time it will take to complete the repairs to your vehicle. As a general rule, drivable cars are scheduled in on Monday and whenever possible delivered back to customers by Friday. Be sure to check with your advisor for the specifics on your vehicle.

CAN I GET A RIDE HOME WHEN I DROP OFF MY CAR?
Yes, we would be happy to provide this service to you. We want each customer's visit to be a positive experience and will work diligently towards that goal.

HOW CAN I GET A RENTAL CAR?
If you need a rental car, we can help you make the necessary arrangements. Insurance companies will only pay for a rental car if you have that option on your policy. Check your policy and/or call your insurance company to find out if you have rental coverage and what your specific limitations are.

HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN MY CAR IS DONE?
You will be notified by phone when your vehicle is ready to be picked up. You can also check this website. You will see a message next to the last picture of your vehicle telling you that your vehicle is ready to be picked up. Feel free to call or e-mail your advisor during the repair process if you have questions or concerns.

IS THERE A WARRANTY ON THE REPAIRS TO MY VEHICLE?
Yes. Bertolli's Auto Body guarantees all of their repairs.

DO I HAVE TO PAY A DEDUCTIBLE?
The amount of deductible that you will be responsible for is determined by your insurance policy. If you carry standard collision, you will have to pay your deductible regardless of whether you were at fault. If you carry broad collision, and you were not at fault, your insurance company most likely will waive your deductible. Insurance companies determine fault by your account of the accident when you make the claim, and by reviewing the accident report filed with the police department. If you aren't sure about your deductible, you can call your advisor and he can tell you whether your insurance company has waived your deductible or whether you will be responsible to pay this when you pick up your vehicle.

WHO DO I PAY MY DEDUCTIBLE TO?
If your deductible is not waived, it will be your responsibility to pay Bertolli's Auto Body when you pick up your vehicle. If you aren't sure about your deductible, you can call your advisor and he can tell you whether your insurance company has waived your deductible or whether it will be your responsibility.

WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?
The easiest and most convenient way to pay for your portion of the repairs to your vehicle is with a major credit card. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. Of course, cash and checks are always welcome.

WHAT ARE BETTERMENT CHARGES?
Parts that wear out and need replacement with time and use (i.e., tires, batteries, and suspension parts) are commonly subject to betterment charges when they are replaced during the repair process. These betterment charges are determined by your insurance company and are pro-rated based on actual miles on your vehicle.

CAN I WASH MY CAR?
RECOMMENDATIONS AND PRECAUTIONS IN THE FIRST 30 DAYS
DO'S · Wash the vehicle by hand with cool water and a very mild car wash solution using a soft cloth or sponge. ·
Always use clean fresh water. · Wash your vehicle in the shade
. DONT'S · Do not use a commercial car wash. Stiff brushes or sponges could mar the finish and damage the surface. · Do not "dry wipe" your vehicle. Dry wiping can scratch the finish. · Do not drive on gravel roads. Chipping the finish is
easily done in the first 30 days. · Avoid parking under trees and utility lines which are likely to attract birds. Bird
droppings have a high acid content and will damage a freshly painted surface. Also, tree sap can mar or spot a freshly
painted surface. · Do not spill gasoline, oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid, or windshield solvent on the new finish.
Do not scrape ice or snow from the newly painted surface. Scrapers can act like a paint scraper on a newly painted
finish.
RECOMMENDATIONS AND PRECAUTIONS IN THE FIRST 90 DAYS
DON'T · Do not wax or polish the vehicle. This will allow the finish to dry and harden completely.motor oil change

Action Plan to Deal with Accidents:

1. Keep an Emergency Kit in Your Glove Compartment. Drivers should carry a cell phone, as well as pen and paper for taking notes, a disposable camera to take photos of the vehicles at the scene, and a card with information about medical allergies or conditions that may require special attention if there are serious injuries. Also, keep a list of contact numbers for law enforcement agencies handy. Drivers can keep this free fill-in-the-blanks accident information form in their glove compartment. A set of cones, warning triangles or emergency flares should be kept in the trunk.

2. Keep Safety First. Drivers involved in minor accidents with no serious injuries should move cars to the side of the road and out of the way of oncoming traffic. Leaving cars parked in the middle of the road or busy intersection can result in additional accidents and injuries. If a car cannot be moved, drivers and passengers should remain in the cars with seatbelts fastened for everyone's safety until help arrives. Make sure to turn on hazard lights and set out cones, flares or warning triangles if possible.

3. Exchange Information. After the accident, exchange the following information: name, address, phone number, insurance company, policy number, driver license number and license plate number for the driver and the owner of each vehicle. If the driver's name is different from the name of the insured, establish what the relationship is and take down the name and address for each individual. Also make a written description of each car, including year, make, model and color — and the exact location of the collision and how it happened. Finally, be polite but don't tell the other drivers or the police that the accident was your fault, even if you think it was.

4. Photograph and Document the Accident. Use your camera to document the damage to all the vehicles. Keep in mind that you want your photos to show the overall context of the accident so that you can make your case to a claims adjuster. If there were witnesses, try to get their contact information; they may be able to help you if the other drivers dispute your version of what happened.

5. File An Accident Report. Although law enforcement officers in many locations may not respond to accidents unless there are injuries, drivers should file a state vehicle accident report, which is available at police stations and often on the Department of Motor Vehicles Web site as a downloadable file. A police report often helps insurance companies speed up the claims process.

6. Know What Your Insurance Covers. The whole insurance process will be easier following your accident if you know the details of your coverage. For example, don't wait until after an accident to find out that your policy doesn't automatically cover costs for towing or a replacement rental car. Generally, for only a dollar or two extra each month, you can add coverage for rental car reimbursement, which provides a rental car for little or no money while your car is in the repair shop or if it is stolen. Check your policy for specificsObviously, it's much easier to prevent accidents and injuries in the first place than to deal with the painful aftereffects.

Here are a number of tips to help keep you safe and reduce accidents:

* Use seatbelts. While seatbelts don't prevent accidents, they greatly reduce injuries and fatalities. Of the 42,000 people killed in traffic accidents in 2001, nearly 60 percent were not using their seatbelts.

* Carefully look both ways — twice — before crossing an intersection. It's easy to miss an oncoming car at first glance because it's hidden by your car's windshield frame.

* Don't speed into an intersection the instant the light turns green. This is a good way to get rammed by someone running the red light in the other direction.

* After waiting for traffic from the left to clear before you make your right hand turn, don't forget to look to the right again just before you proceed. Pedestrians or cars may have suddenly materialized in your path while you were waiting to turn.

* Anticipate unexpected changes in traffic. For example, if you're in a fast-moving lane with empty road ahead and the next lane over is backed up, be prepared for impatient motorists to dart into the lane directly in front of you.

* Always check your blind spot before changing lanes — don't just rely on your rearview mirrors.

* Practice extra caution when passing large vehicles, such as semi trucks, which have even larger blind spots.

* Pay special attention to posted speed limits around schools and in residential areas; children and pets may unexpectedly run into the street.

* Leave enough space between yourself and the car ahead of you, when traveling and when stopped. On the highway, this may save you from a fender bender. If you stop on a hill behind a car with a manual transmission, the extra room may save you from being rammed by the car ahead of you. Also, it provides an out if you're approached by a carjacker in a dubious neighborhood.

* Don't procrastinate about performing safety maintenance and repairs on your car. Have your brakes checked and wheels aligned as soon as it's needed.

* If you are in a moving vehicle when an accident occurs, immediately and safely pull over to the side of the road,
turn off your car, and turn on your hazard lights. Check to see if anyone is hurt. If there is an injured person, do
not move them until you take standard first aid measures. Place flares, cones, or triangles alongside the road a few hundred feet before the accident so traffic is aware that there is an accident ahead.

* Call 911 and inform them of any injuries. If you are on a freeway and do not have access to a cell phone or telephone, check for a roadside phone that you can use.

* Trade information with everyone involved in the accident. Be sure to exchange the following:

-Name, address, phone number of all drivers

-Name, address, phone number of all passengers or witnesses

-Driver's license numbers and license plate numbers

-Insurance companies of all drivers involved

-Registered owners of all cars

-Year, model, make, etc. of all cars involved

* Do not discuss what happened with anyone else but the police. Do not say that it was your fault, and do not make accusations. These comments may be used against you later. If time and accident conditions allow, take notes about your perception of what happened.

* Immediately report the accident to your insurance company, and to the police if there is over $500 in damages (in Washington state-check with your state laws for the dollar amount in your state). You may find that the other driver has filed a report stating that the accident was your fault.

* If you have or suspect an injury, visit a doctor right awayFollowing these simple steps will keep the accident scene as safe as possible, and will help to ensure that no one has to bear unnecessary blame. The next time you are involved in an accident, whether it be a fender-bender or a rollover, don't panic. Now you know the proper procedure for dealing with this type of situation.

After a Motor Vehicle Accident: What to Do

Would you know what to do if you were driving and hit another vehicle? A pedestrian? When a car accident happens, injuries may be severe and emotions may be high. However, there are important things that must be taken care of both at the scene of any accident and soon afterward. Following is a list of things that should be done, if at all possible, when any automobile accident occurs.

Stay at the Scene

The cardinal rule for all car accidents is that you should never leave the scene until it is appropriate to do so. If you leave the scene of an accident, particularly where someone has sustained injuries or was killed, you can face serious criminal penalties for being a "hit-and-run" driver.

Exception: If you are hit by another car in a deserted area, use caution in stopping and getting out of your vehicle. Unfortunately, there have been reported incidents where a person exited their vehicle in a deserted or unsafe area after being bumped by another car only to be robbed or killed. Instead of getting out of the car if you find yourself in that situation, drive to the nearest police station to report the accident. If it turns out that you were being over-cautious and the other driver had no ill intentions, you may be embarrassed, but you will also be safe.

Check on All Drivers and Passengers

Before assessing property damage, check to make sure that everyone else involved in the accident is okay. Get medical attention for anyone who may need it. If a person is unconscious or complains of neck or back pain, it is best not to move them until qualified medical personnel arrive. In some situations, for example if an injured person is lying in a pool of gas that you fear may ignite at any time, you may have no choice but to move them. If you are in that type of situation, try to move them as steadily and slowly as possible while supporting their neck and back. The less movement, the better.

Call the Police
After a Motor Vehicle Accident: What to DoEspecially if the accident involves significant property damage, physical injury, or death, you may need to call the police. Ask that a police report be filed in situations where law enforcement officers do arrive at the scene, and obtain the name and badge numbers of any responding officers.

Exchange Information
Talk to the drivers of any other vehicles involved in the accident. Get their names, phone numbers, addresses, drivers' license numbers, license plate numbers, and basic insurance information. If there are passengers in any of the vehicles, obtain their names, telephone numbers, and addresses as well. In talking to drivers of other vehicles, you should try to be cordial and cooperative in determining that everyone is okay and in exchanging basic information. However, do not apologize for anything at the scene. If you jump out of your car and blurt out, "I'm so sorry I ran that red light! Is everyone okay?" you may back yourself into a corner in terms of legal liability for what happened. Immediately after an accident, the scene is chaotic and it might not be evident who was at fault, or who was more at fault, in causing the accident. Moreover, in many states, fault is not determinative of which insurer will pay for any loss. Therefore, try to keep your conscience in check, at least until things get sorted out, so that you don't admit guilt unintentionally or unnecessarily.

Talk to Witnesses
Ask every witness what he or she saw. Get their names, telephone numbers or addresses, if possible. Whether the witnesses are residents of the area, businesspeople that work nearby, or passersby who were in the vicinity, try to talk to as many people as you can. Ask them, in particular, if they have ever witnessed other accidents in the same place. If a witness is hesitant to talk to you, don't beg or threaten them. Forcing information from someone will get you nowhere. Write down what they tell you and, if they agree, simply get their name and phone number so that you, your attorney, the insurance company, or the court can contact them again.Inform Your Insurance Company
As soon as possible, tell your insurance company that you have been involved in an accident. Cooperate with your insurance company and tell them the truth about what happened and the extent of your injuries. If the insurance company finds out that you have lied to them about anything, you can get into serious trouble, not the least of which may be the denial of any coverage for the accident. Build support for your case when discussing the matter with your insurance company. Be able to explain to them the facts of the case in a clear manner. Obtain and review a copy of any police report, so that you can point out to the insurance company who broke what traffic laws or who was at fault for the accident. Such information will often be provided in the report. Although the insurance company may already know the facts of your case, taking an active interest in making sure your rights are protected will force the insurance company to take you seriously.

Keep Track of Your Medical Treatment
n ote any doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, or other medical professionals that you receive treatment from, and each medical provider that referred you to other caregivers. Having a written diary of this information will help you itemize your medical expenses and treatment for your insurer, your attorney, and the court.Take Picture
Take photographs of any damage to your vehicle as soon as possible after the accident. Having photographic proof will help your insurance adjuster determine how much you should be compensated for the damages to your car, and may also assist your case in court, if needed. If you have pictures of your car from before the accident, these pictures will offer a great "compare and contrast" to show the true extent of the damage sustained in the accident.

Get a Property Damage Valuation

Obtain a valuation for damages to your car from your insurance company. If you are not satisfied with the manner in
which your insurance company has valued your vehicle, do not give up. Get two estimates for the repair of your car on your own, or have two dealers provide a quote for the cost of replacing your vehicle if there was a total loss. Communicate to the adjuster your concerns and position, and be assertive. If you cannot agree on the value of your car,
consider alternative dispute resolution, or consult an attorney.

Use Caution in Discussing the Incident

Do not talk to anyone about the accident other than your attorney, your insurance company, and the police. Do not talk to a representative of another insurance company under any circumstances, without the knowledge of your attorney or your insurance company. If representatives from other insurance companies should call you, be polite, but ask them to call your attorney or insurance company to arrange for an interview. Also, get the representative's name and number, and tell your insurance company or attorney that someone seeking information about your accident contacted you.

Be Wary of Early Settlement Offers

Be careful if you are offered a settlement from an insurance company. Make sure that any physical injuries you may have suffered have been treated, and that you have a doctor's prognosis. Some injuries may not show up or reach their greatest level of discomfort until many days, weeks, or months after the accident. Don't settle a claim until you know you will be compensated for all of your injuries, and consult an attorney before signing any documents pertaining to settlement.

After a car accident, you may be entitled to compensation for injury and property damage.

Filing a Claim

Steps:
1. Secure a copy of the police report.

2. Know what protection your insurance policy provides.

3. Sign a medical release so that injury records will be made available to the insurance company.

4. Make a claim for any injuries under medical pay coverage, even if you have other coverages or if the other person is responsible.

5. Make a claim for injury, lost wages or extended disability under uninsured motorist coverage if the other party was at fault but not insured or inadequately insured.

6. Secure at least two car repair estimates, or three value appraisals if your car was totaled.

7. Present estimates and allow your car to be photographed and inspected.

8. Present bills for towing and storage costs.

9. Ask your agent to help arrange for a temporary substitute vehicle if you have rental reimbursement coverage.

10. Notify your agent of any damage from the accident discovered during the course of car repairs.

Tips:
Remain polite but persistent when dealing with insurance representatives.

Certain losses resulting from wind, hail, flood or vandalism are paid under comprehensive coverage, and no deductible (or a lesser one) may apply.

Be patient to avoid losing compensation for damages that may not be readily apparent.

Warnings:
Expect your car's value to be determined by its condition at the time of loss. A high mileage car is worth less than an identical car with less mileage.

Be prepared to pay any deductible to the repair shop.

The insurance company will be allowed to deal only with the attorney if you use one.

Dealing With the Other Insurance Company

Steps:
1. Make certain the other driver has all pertinent information to turn over to his or her insurer, including your name, address, telephone numbers and vehicle type.

2. Follow up with a telephone call to the other driver's insurance agent and outline any injuries and damages.

3. Cooperate completely when asked for estimates of damage or when asked to let your vehicle be inspected by a claims representative.

4. Present a list of other property damaged in the accident: luggage, cameras, cellular phones.

5. Know that your claim extends beyond the actual costs of injury to include pain and suffering and lost work time.

Tips:
The other insurance company may be adversarial, but it's in the company's interest to settle the claim quickly and fairly.

Warnings:
Help from an attorney may be valuable, but lawyers are often entitled to a significant percentage of any claim settlement.

Must I obtain three estimates?
No one can tell you to obtain more than one estimate. You, as the vehicle owner, however, may do so should this be your
desire.

Do I have to take my vehicle to an insurance company drive-in claims facility for an estimate?
You are not required to take your vehicle to a drive-in claims facility. It is your right as the vehicle owner to obtain an estimate wherever you choose. You are only required to notify your insurance company of the vehicle’s location so that it may be examined by the claims adjuster. However, if you have already gone to a drive-in claims facility, make sure you take a copy of the insurance adjuster’s estimate with you when obtaining repair shop estimates and choosing a facility to repair your vehicle

If I go to an insurance company’s drive-in claims facility, do I have to take my vehicle to one of its preferred shops for repair?
There are no laws or regulations requiring you to go to any specific repair shop, however, some insurance companies practice the policy of only paying for vehicle damages equal to the estimate amount prepared at one of its preferred shops. However, keep in mind that you are the vehicle owner. Don’t let your insurance company take away your freedom of choice!

Am I required to notify my insurance company before repairs being on my vehicle?
YES.
Your insurance policy requires you to notify your insurance company and make a claim report. Once a claim report has been made, you may proceed to leave your vehicle at the repair facility of your choice and notify the insurance company claim representative or adjuster where your damaged vehicle may be inspected. Once a claim representative or adjuster has had an opportunity to inspect your vehicle, you may authorize repairs to begin.

Who is responsible for the guarantee of workmanship and safety of my automobile repairs…the insurance company or the repair shop?
The repair shop, and in limited circumstances, your insurance company. Your insurance company is not accepting the liability for the quality and safety of your vehicle’s repair. Therefore, you and you alone must control the fate of your vehicle’s repair by choosing a proper facility that is adequately trained and equipped to restore your vehicle to its pre-accident condition. You have the legal right and authority to do so.

What should I look for when choosing a facility to repair my vehicle?
Referrals from other satisfied customers is a start. The shop owner/manager should be willing to take you around the shop to give you a first hand view of the equipment and procedures being used. Also, ask for evidence of employee training and certification. Notice the attitude and commitment of the shop owner/manager towards a quality restoration of your vehicle to its pre-accident condition.

Can my insurance company authorize a repair shop to start repairs on my vehicle without my consent?
NO…
Only the vehicle owner may authorize repairs. You must be presented with an estimate to know what is being repaired on your vehicle before repairs are started. Additionally, Iowa requires written estimates on repairs. Who is responsible for payment to the repair shop…the insurance company or me? You are. Your insurance policy contract states that your insurance company will pay for the damages to your vehicle, less the deductible amount. You may instruct your insurance company to pay directly to the repair shop of your choice, however, full payment must be arranged prior to your vehicle being picked up.

My insurance company does not agree with my repair facility on how my vehicle should be repaired or what it should cost…what can I do?
Most insurance policy contracts contain an appraisal clause. When the insurance company and the customer fail to agree, either party may demand an appraisal of loss within 60 days after the claim has been filed. Each party may then select a competent appraiser to represent them, and the two appraisers will select a competent and disinterested umpire. If the two appraisers do not agree, they submit their findings to the umpire. A decision by the umpire which agrees with either appraiser will determine the amount of loss. I am having a problem with my insurance company.

Can the State Insurance Director’s office help me? Yes, but the Director’s authority is limited. Keep in mind that the insurance director has no judicial authority to determine negligence or establish the value of a loss or injury. Another driver damaged my car by his own negligence. What differences are there between having my own Insurance company pay for the repairs and having that driver (or his insurance company) pay for them? There is a marked legal difference between an insured and a claimant when filing a claim with an insurance company. The difference is between "contract" and "tort" theories of liability and the benefits and drawbacks associated with each. An attorney can give you a full explanation of your rights and obligations before you decide how to pursue a particular claim. Safety, Quality and Cost of Repairs If your vehicle is damaged through someone else’s fault, that other person’s insurance company generally cannot be held directly responsible for the quality or safety of repairs done on your car. The standard measure of damages is the "reasonable" cost of necessary repairs. Therefore, select a repair facility that understands its obligations to you, its customer, and exercise caution when someone tells you that the repairs can be performed "cheaper" somewhere else. Keep in mind, as the owner, you ;have the right to choose the repair methods best suited to restore your vehicle.

Do I have to get three estimates?
Under ORS 746275 you don't need more than one estimate and you get to pick the shop of your choice. Your only obligation is to inform the insurance company where you are having the vehicle repaired so they may have access to the vehicle to inspect the damage.

Why are estimates so different from one shop to another?
One of the reasons our estimate may differ from another shop is because we believe in writing a thorough estimate up front. Necessary repairs may be left out of another estimate making the dollar amount appear much less. In the end, once the repairs are complete, the total cost of repairs would be very similar. However, one of the things that sets us apart from other shops is the detailed steps we take in repairing a car, which may also account for any differences. For example, when we do any painting, we remove moldings, emblems, and other items that would get in the way of painting your vehicle as completely as possible. This is known as "remove and install." Our goal with every vehicle is
to bring your car back to the way it was before the accident.

How do I know if I need to pay a deductible?
If you are responsible for the accident, and the claim is going through your insurance company, you will need to determine how much your deductible is based on what your policy states. Deductibles range anywhere from $250.00 -$1000.00. The amount of the deductible also depends on whether the claim is considered a comprehensive claim, collision,
uninsured motorist or "hit and run". It is very important to check with your insurance agent to determine the type of deductible.

When and how do I pay my deductible?
Your deductible is due when you pick up the vehicle after repairs are complete. Payment for the deductible may be made by check (with I.D.) or VISA and MasterCard. Up to $500.Old Dominion also has 90 days interest free financing available. Ask for details. Can you "bury the deductible" for me?Although we understand that the accident is an inconvenience to you and an expense you weren't exactly expecting, to "hide" or "bury" your deductible in the repair costs to the insurance company is considered fraud and we know you wouldn't want to be involved in any fraudulent activity!!

What does R & I mean? (Remove and Install)
This is a term that refers to the removal of trim pieces (moldings, door handles, emblems, etc.) from the vehicle so the paint may be properly applied. In order to guarantee our paint, we do this as a general practice on all repairs.

What will I drive while my vehicle is being repaired?
